Hugues Bogaerts

Dr. Hugues Bogaerts studied Medicine at the University of Ghent in Belgium. He graduated in 1981 and practiced medicine for some years as a generalist. By now he has worked for more than 25 years on the development, licensing and market introduction of a wide range of vaccines mostly during the time he worked for GlaxoSmithKline or one of the legacy companies.

As the Director of international Clinical Development (1994) with responsibility for all paediatric vaccines, he coordinated the development of the company’s extensive range of DTPa-based paediatric combinations (Infanrix®), MMR and varicella vaccines. In 1996 he received global medical responsibility for licensed vaccines, and was appointed Vice President Worldwide Medical for GlaxoSmithKline Biologicals in 2001. In 2003 he was appointed to the GSK Biologicals Management Team. For the period 2005 to 2008, he assumed specific responsibility for Worldwide Medical Affairs related to prophylactic HPV vaccines, preparing for the introduction of the company’s vaccine against cervical cancer (Cervarix®). As Vice President and Senior Medical Director GSK Biologicals (2008) he acted as an advisor, expert and ambassador across the world of the scientific and vaccine knowledge of GSK Biologicals. In that capacity he was often seen as a speaker at international scientific meetings. Dr Bogaerts is a member of several international scientific and professional associations. He is also a Fellow of the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Medicine of the Royal College of Physicians of the United Kingdom, and was a Lecturer in vaccinology at the Faculty of Medicine of the Catholic University of Louvain, Belgium. Over the years he has authored many original publications in peer-reviewed medical journals and in textbooks such as Vaccines, Plotkin – Orenstein, Saunders 4rd, 5th, 6th & 7th editions.

In 2011, Dr Bogaerts created his own consultancy company, providing medico-scientific advise and support to Bio-pharma companies.
