What does ‘a life worth living’ look like? That was the question we asked as part of our 2015 Communication Challenge photo competition. The challenge was to send a photo – with a sentence – that answers the question.

We asked Jorge de Guzmán, a Spanish designer who won 3rd prize in the competition, about his interest in photography and his inspiration for entering the competition.
Tell us about your photo. Who is in it and what inspired you take it?
You can see the hand of my brother’s son when he was just a few days old. He’s holding my hand. He grabbed my hand tightly and in that moment I thought – We’re going to be friends forever – and hence the title of the photo: ‘I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship’. It’s a famous line from the movie Casablanca. That is also the reason that the photo is in black and white.
It’s a great caption and photo. Could you say a little more on how this image makes ‘life worth living’?
Friendship and love. The feeling of wanting to see this little person grow healthy and strong.
Tell us about your interest in photography. Is it a hobby or a profession?
I am a graduate with a degree in Fine Arts and I’m interested in anything related to the image. I’m a designer and creative by profession.
How did you learn about the competition and what made you want to enter?
I heard about the contest through a friend and thought it was very easy to send a picture and participate. I entered with no particular purpose other than to participate – a but obviously the prize money never hurts!
Would you encourage others to enter the Communication Challenge next year?
Of course! Easy, fun and rewarding
